We congratulate Jake Richter, former Conservatory Summer Jazz Camp participant and private student of percussion faculty member David Bayles, for being one of ten incoming freshman selected to receive the Barbara and David Jacobs Scholarship from Indiana University. This is a full scholarship to attend the Jacobs School of Music, which is often ranked with the prestigious music programs at Eastman and Julliard.

Six Conservatory piano students received a Superior Rating at the recent National Federation of Music Clubs auditions held at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) on Sunday, February 24, 2013: Ajolise Casarez, Ari Gehweiler, Veronica Laster, Taylor Samuel, Aidan Snyder, and Holden Snyder. All six students study with faculty member Linda O'Brien. In addition to the Superior Rating, each student received 5 points towards a future trophy if they continue to participate.

Veronica Martinez-Brockhus, student of Stefanie Jacob, has won a Civic Music Association of Milwaukee scholarship. Out of 33 students who made it through the preliminaries to the scholarship weekend, 8 were granted awards and also performed Sunday, January 27, 2013, in a student showcase held here at the Conservatory.

Steven Hewitt, piano

Former Conservatory student Steven Hewitt has been accepted into the Early Entrance Program at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA), at the age of 13. Steven studied piano with Conservatory faculty member Curtis Stotlar for four years, and would like to study both engineering and music at the CSULA.

Sean Hirthe, saxophone

Sean Hirthe is a recent graduate of Milwaukee High School of the Arts and a long time student of the Wisconsin Conservatory. Upon completion of his studies, Sean was awarded the Patrick S. Gilmore Wind Ensemble Award, the Jazz Department’s Outstanding Senior Award, The Scholar Athlete Award, and had qualified for the WSMA State competition four years in a row. He also graduated Valedictorian, Vice President of National Honor Society, active member of the Boy Scouts of America, and Cross Country Team Captain.
Sean has been involved with the Conservatory for many years as a private student, part of the recently created Jazz Institute, and now is involved with our summer internship.
His current plans are to pursue a music education degree in the fall at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, where he’ll be studying with acclaimed classical saxophonist Eugene Rousseau. |
