Inside the Music & Quick Classes

The Conservatory offers several ­concert-themed mini-courses each ­semester!

Inside the Music
Each Inside the Music class explores a particular concert, ­composer or era which is ­being presented by Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Florentine Opera, or the Conservatory. These classes meet for 1 or 2 weeks and include a ticket to a concert or ­production.

Lust, jealousy, bigotry, seduction, betrayal, and revenge—American Opera comes into its own with Carlisle Floyd's opera based on the Biblical tale of Susanna and the Elders and set in the Ozarks. Soul Jazz | $25

Whether by the name of funk, boogaloo or soul, jazz musicians have long incorporated these popular rhythms into their own tradition, infusing them with a new sophistication while maintaining their danceability. We Six guitarist Paul Silbergleit guides you through the grooves chosen for the group's upcoming concert at WCM. Conservatory Quick Classes

Conservatory Quick Classes give ­students the opportunity to explore and learn about a wide variety of musical styles in classes that run from 1 to 6 weeks.

Newer pop songs, old folk music, and classical pieces have more and more become the inspiration for jazz arrangements and compositions, supplementing the older source material of Broadway and Tin Pan Alley in the repertoire of the tradition. Come listen to how the Beatles, Sibelius, and music from around the world have been assimilated by this great musical melting pot of a genre. 6 wks.

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington is considered by many not only the foremost artist in the jazz tradition, but also the most prolific composer altogether in American history. In a career spanning five decades, he led a highly original band that helped define the sound of the Harlem Renaissance and of the Swing Era, and gave the world many great and enduring songs, as well as longer, more elaborate musical works. As a bandleader, he brought into the limelight numerous unique and stellar performers, such as Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster, and Cootie Williams, as well as his frequent co-composer Billy Strayhorn, and was himself an excellent pianist with roots in the stride style. Come explore the amazing variety of compositions and performances given to us by this singular giant of jazz. 6 wks.
