Born into a musical family, Greg Tardy began his musical career studying classical clarinet. While studying with renowned clarinetists Russell Dagon and Jack Snavely, Tardy planned on being a symphony clarinetist. During college he gradually switched to saxophone, and began learning jazz music. In 1992, Tardy started playing with the legendary drummer, Elvin Jones, and recorded his first CD, Crazy Love. He has gone on to perform and/or record with many prominent jazz artists including: Andrew Hill, Tom Harrell, Dave Douglas, Wynton Marsalis, Jay McShann, Nicholas Payton, Roy Hargrove, Steve Coleman, Betty Carter, Don Byron, Bill Frisell, Rashied Ali , Ellis Marsalis, Brian Lynch, John Patitucci, and many more.

He has also performed and/or recorded along with many other notable saxophonists, such as Joe Lovano, Mark Turner, Chris Potter, Dewey Redman, Ravi Coltrane, and others. He has toured extensively nationally and internationally; both as a bandleader, and as a sideman.

In more recent years, Tardy has gone full circle, by bringing his clarinet out of retirement, using it on recordings by Tom Harrell, Ohad Talmor/Steve Swallow, Stefan Harris, Chris Potter and Andrew Hill.

He also has recorded 11 CDs of his own, including one on the major “Impulse” label. His CDs have been covered by most major publications such as Downbeat Magazine, All About Jazz, Jazztimes, etc. In 1998, Tardy was nominated as Best Debut Artist for the New York Jazz Awards. He has been prominently featured on several Grammy winning CDs, and also on several CDs named Downbeat “Record of the Year”. He is currently on the “Steeplechase” label. His latest newest CD “Hope”, is due to be released in January 2014.
