JUNE
14th Annual High School Jazz Camp • 6541
Ten days of straight-ahead jazz designed for serious players.
Instrumentalists perform in small combos and participate in
special performances. Learn about jazz history, improvisation and
careers. Merit scholarships and financial aid are available; be sure
to inquire when auditioning.
Experience: Placement audition required. Select one
piece demonstrating technical ability and jazz knowledge.
Accompaniment allowed but not provided.

Intro to Jazz Camp • 6540
For the instrumentalist who wants to learn more about jazz, this
two–week camp teaches the basics through listening sessions,
demonstrations and performance opportunities. Open to middle
and high school students.
Experience: Instrumental experience is required.

Big Band • 6542
Join the Conservatory Big Band. Play classic charts by Basie,
Ellington and Bob Mintzer under the direction of David Bayles.
Focus will be on reading and ensemble skills. Students must
audition for placement during Jazz Camp auditions. Preference will
be given to those musicians who participate in Jazz Camp. Merit
scholarships and financial aid are available; be sure to inquire
when auditioning.

Music, Theater, Ballet & Art Camp (held at the Wilson Center)
Immerse yourself in the arts! Every young artist will find fun and
inspiration at this creative day camp. Teaching artists from First
Stage Theater Academy, Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee Ballet
and the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music will roll up their sleeves to
help you discover your own creative talents. All Campers participate
in special intensive sessions in each of the four disciplines and meet
working artists who will share their talents.

JULY
8th Annual String Camp (Violin, Viola,
Violoncello, String Bass) • 6544
The eighth annual String Camp will help you to maintain and
enhance your musical skills while you meet new people. Be prepared
for those fall auditions and competitions as you enjoy a fun week of
workshops, videos, rehearsals and performances. Play in a chamber
group, discover the secrets of our instruments, and the best way to
take good care of them, enhance your technique, experiment with
different orchestra music, and expand your musicianship day by day.

Beginning String Camp (Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass) • 6543
Here’s a wonderful opportunity for your child to enhance his/her
musical skills this summer. Students will experience the joy of making
music with other children as they participate in small and large group
classes, and learn more about how instruments are made, brush up
on their note reading skills, watch music performing videos, learn new
pieces and much more.
Instructors: Same instructors for both String Camps
Requirements: End of Suzuki Book I (completed Minuet I) or
beginning Suzuki Book II (for all instruments). Note reading proficiency.

String Add–a–Workshop: Dr. Violin & Mr. Fiddle • 6549
Students in the camp may sign up for an additional class experience
to take place following each morning session. This lively and fun
workshop will introduce young string players to the non–classical
horizons of music. It also will focus on the fundamentals of
improvisation and the expansion of the students’ musical palettes.
Students will study and perform a variety of styles from bluegrass, to
jazz, to rock ‘n roll.

Drum Set Camps • 6545 / 6546
These camps will address the stylistic and technical demands of the
drum set player. The musical styles of Jazz, Afro–Cuban, Brazilian,
Funk and Rock will be studied. Other topics of study include: four–way
coordination, rudimental application to the drum set, chart reading,
mixed meters, soloing, feel, time development, analysis of recordings/
transcription, developing practical practice methods and more. Camp
participants will gain invaluable experience performing with members
of our piano, bass and percussion faculty.

Kids on Stage • 6550
Let’s put on a show! If you love to sing and dance, this camp is for
you. Students will learn some great musical theatre songs, both old
and new. This camp provides opportunities to learn the fundamentals
of singing, participate in solo and ensemble performance, act
in character, learn choreography, make friends, and build self–
confidence.

Instrument and Art Exploration Camp • 6551 Collaboration with the Milwaukee Art Museum
Join us for 5 full days of instrument investigation and art exploration!
Each morning starts at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music for
group instruction on instruments. Each student will rotate (in small
groups) at the Conservatory learning piano, percussion, harp and
musicianship through Orff instruments and methodology. At lunch
time students will travel from the Conservatory to the Milwaukee Art
Museum. Transportation will be provided. After lunch and a good
stretch in the sunshine, each student will resume instrument sampling
with Conservatory faculty on the recorder. The afternoon continues as
the Milwaukee Art Museum faculty take students on gallery walks and
introduce them to the correlations between music and art. Students
will explore visual movement, gesture, emotion, color and composition
as they create their own responsive art works each day.

Guitar Weekend Workshop • 6552
Guitarists of all styles and levels! Come enjoy an intensive weekend
of exploring the instrument – expand your experience with different
styles, while deepening your knowledge in familiar areas. You choose
a major and minor course of study from four basic genres:
fingerstyle, jazz, classical, and rock/blues. You’ll meet other
guitarists, play in groups, attend jam sessions and choose from
a variety of special topic workshops such as Improvisation,
Slide Guitar and Sight Reading.
Experience: Minimal guitar experience is required.

Piano Camp • 6553
Don’t sit at that piano by yourself! Come and enjoy a week of fun and
exciting activities with other kids that will improve and expand your
musicianship. Discover and develop your creative talents as you learn
to write your own composition. Sharpen your rhythm skills through
games and movement activities and strengthen your piano skills in
our electronic piano lab. Explore a new dimension of piano music as
you learn the beginning elements of jazz and improve your listening
and ensemble skills when you play duets with another camper.
Campers will work in small groups based on age and ability.
Experience: Two or more years of instruction.

Piano Camp: Add–the–Afternoon • 6554
Take a break and eat your bag lunch while you view music videos followed
by a chance to visit and enjoy lending privileges in our music library. Next,
over the course of the four days, campers will have the opportunity to take
two 30 minute lessons with a Wisconsin Conservatory of Music faculty
member along with two sessions for practicing. Participants will proceed
to our beautiful Helen Bader Recital Hall and either perform or sit in on
a daily Performance/Master class with other campers. This class will
provide insights into piano technique, musicianship and interpretation in
addition to providing performance tips. And what could be more exciting
than learning about what goes into a recording session? Campers will
take turns receiving hands on training in our recording studio while other
campers perform in the Performance/Master class. The day concludes with
a relaxing yet informative session about piano composers and the music
that they wrote.

JULY/AUGUST
Instrument and Nature Exploration Camp
6555 / 6612 Collaboration with the Urban Ecology Center
Join us for 5 full days of instrument investigation and nature exploration!

by the UEC. After lunch and a good stretch in the sunshine at the Riverside
Park, each student will resume instrument sampling with Conservatory
faculty on the hand drums. The afternoon continues with programming at
Riverside Park and the music found in nature. The Urban Ecology Center
staff will help students learn how composers portray the natural world in
their music, play nature–inspired instruments such as didgeridoos and

AUGUST
Middle School Band Camp • 6591
This one week intensive camp is for students playing a band instrument.
Each day students will participate in two full band rehearsals, master
classes on their instruments, an elective class and they will hear a
concert by a local professional performing ensemble. Students will
be placed into one of two bands based on playing ability. The camp
culminates in a final performance by campers Friday afternoon. This
camp is not to be missed by the serious middle school band musician.
Experience: 2–5 years on band instrument (flute, oboe, clarinet bassoon,
saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, french horn, tuba, percussion)
