Joyce Altman (Post.)
WCM Faculty Member 1970’s | President & CEO 1993-2003
Joyce began her connection with music and the Conservatory as a five-year-old student studying piano. She continued her education at the Conservatory until she was eighteen years old and received a teaching certificate. In the 1970’s, she taught theory, composition, and ear training in the preparatory and college divisions of the Conservatory. As a parent, Joyce enrolled her two children in lessons at the Conservatory, so they would also share in her passion for music.
In 1993, Joyce “came back home” to the Conservatory (as she once said). When Joyce first came back the Conservatory it was on the brink of extinction from failing funds and a decaying building. Under Joyce’s leadership near extinction turned into growth. As President and CEO, Joyce undeniably spear-headed a renaissance of Music in Wisconsin through her work at the Conservatory.
In October of 2003, Joyce bid farewell to the Conservatory as President and CEO to venture out for new things. Although Joyce was no longer President and CEO, she continued to remain a loyal friend of the Conservatory because of her history and personal connection.
