Whiplash & La La Land’s Composer on Finding Your Place in Music

23 Aug 2025 3 min read

Academy Award and Golden Globe–winning composer Justin Hurwitz—best known for his acclaimed scores for La La Land (2016) and Whiplash (2014)—reflects on his path from a student at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music to one of Hollywood’s most celebrated film composers.

Looking back, Hurwitz recalls: “I realized at a pretty young age that I was not meant to be a performer. That I was better at writing it… it’s okay to pivot within music.” His words underscore the importance of discovering one’s true calling and embracing change when the path forward becomes clear.

For Hurwitz, that path has always remained grounded in passion. “If you love music, find a place in music. Somewhere in music, no matter what that is.” Whether composing for the screen or inspiring young musicians, his message resonates with anyone navigating their own creative journey.

He also highlights the larger impact of music education: “The more we invest in kids learning music, the better music we’ll have in 10 or 20 years.” It’s a reminder that nurturing the next generation of artists strengthens not only the future of music, but also the communities it touches.
