Feel the Beat: Adaptive Percussion and the Power of Music

Meet Javon, a remarkable student who is blind—and a powerful example of how music education can transform lives. Through WCM’s adaptive learning percussion program, Javon began learning to play drums using feel, sound, and proper technique. What started as an exploration quickly became a passion and a pathway to connection.

As part of his musical growth, Javon joined his high school’s drumline, an experience that brought new challenges—like learning how to march in a precise formation without visual cues. With the support of his dedicated aides, a rope ladder was created to help him physically understand the spacing of a standard 22.5-inch step. It was a small tool that made a big impact.

This journey wasn’t easy for anyone involved. Our percussion faculty had to stretch and adapt their teaching approaches, redefining what’s possible in a music classroom. But together, they helped open a door—one that’s led to growth, confidence, and belonging for Javon.

This is more than a story about learning drums. It’s a story about collaboration, determination, and the power of music to create meaningful change. Watch the full story:
