WCM ALumni Profile | JUDITH GOETZ
Judith’s connection to WCM began in the 1960s, when she was looking for a music school for her son. As a child, she was taught to learn notes and rhythms before beginning an instrument at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and she wanted the same for her own children here in Milwaukee. Eager for her first son to learn, Judith started teaching classes at the Conservatory. As her family grew, so did her classes, adding on levels so eventually all three children could participate. Many students got their start in music through their WCM classes with Judith.
Although Judith loved teaching these general music classes, piano had always played a huge role in her life. She had hoped to obtain a degree in piano in college but wasn’t able to in order to keep up with her English degree. Finally, after hearing renowned pianist and WCM artist Rebecca Penneys play, she told her husband, “I want to play like that!”, and soon enrolled as a freshman at WCM. After 8 years, Judith fulfilled her dreams and graduated with a piano degree. She remains close friends with Rebecca to this day.
For 32 years, Judith was a beloved faculty member at WCM, teaching piano and general music classes. Shortly after retiring, Joyce Altman, President of WCM at the time, asked her to join the Board of Directors. Unfortunately, the Conservatory reached the pinnacle of a difficult financial spot during Judith’s time on the board. One day, she received an alarming call from the Board Chairman. There was serious discussion of closing the organization, even consideration of shutting it down the very next day.
Judith was among those who knew that a city the size of Milwaukee needed a music school and whole-heartedly believed something could be done to prevent the closure. Judith then got the idea to call the Milwaukee Journal to speak with the editor. After multiple attempts, she got in touch, and an article was published about the history of the Conservatory. Letters came in, showing support and love for WCM, and essential philanthropic support came shortly after. The Wisconsin Conservatory of Music remained open.
For over 60 years, Judith has been a close friend of the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. From a parent of students, to a beloved teacher, and now a supporter, she is a true part of the Conservatory Community.
