After sharing her story with the world, Flamenco artist and WCM guitar department chair Marija Temo took the US Spanish-language edition of NBC’s “The Voice” by storm, turning every chair with her captivating rendition of David Bisbal’s Buleria.

With 2x Grammy winner and Latin music icon Carlos Vives as her coach, Marija had a tremendous showing in the “battle rounds.”

Meet Marija

Marija Temo, virtuoso classical and flamenco guitarist, vocalist, conductor, and former dancer, is currently Guitar Chair and on faculty of the conservatory since 2015. She is known for her educational program, “Flamenco Amazement” and her “Flamenco Communication” Workshop. Marija has been featured with the Baltimore and Calgary Symphonies, as well as in guitar festivals in Asunción, Paraguay, New York City, and The GFA International Guitar Festival and Competition. She had the honor in having two works for guitar and orchestra written for her. In addition, she had the privilege to perform for the Spanish Ambassador and the Crown Prince of Spain. Other performances include being a guest artist with the Zac Brown Band, providing music for a GE Capital/Taylor Guitar national television commercial, as well as a performing in a flamenco documentary. Marija received her Master degree from Peabody of Music and her Bachelor degree from Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music.

Meet Marija’s Coach

Carlos Vives

Music superstar Carlos Vives is one of the most important figures in Latin music and a pioneer of the Colombian and Latin American sound. With more than 20 million records sold worldwide, Vives is the first Colombian artist who has won a Grammys® Award. The music star began his career as an actor in 1982, but it wasn’t until 1986 when he started to sing ballads. In 1991, he began performing classic vallenatos that made him the face of the new Colombian sound around the world. He received the Spirit of Hope Award in 2014 during Telemundo’s Billboard Latin Music Awards for his social work and dedication to philanthropic causes. Today, Vives holds a total of 14 Grammys® Awards. This year, he launched the music video “Si Me Das Tu Amor” with his La Voz colleague Wisin.
